About us

Hello!

Somerset Baptist Church (SBC) was initially formed as The Somerset Baptist Mission in October of 1978.  The Mission, in its beginning stages worshiped in its thirteen members’ homes as well as Hillcrest elementary School in Franklin Twp., Somerset NJ.

In February of 1979, the Raritan Valley Baptist Church in Edison, NJ, which is also affiliated with the Southern Baptist Assoc., sponsored the Somerset Baptist Mission as the Somerset Baptist Chapel.

At that time Reverend Fred Jackson was licensed to preach and became the first Pastor.  In February 1984, the Somerset Baptist Chapel became a fully constituted Church and an affiliated member of the Metropolitan New York Baptist Association, Southern Baptist Convention and it was at this time that we officially assumed the name Somerset Baptist Church.

The present Church building at 9 Pershing Avenue, was obtained in 1982. Over many years the building has been thoughtfully renovated and evolved from a multi-room office and rooming house to the beautiful structure that we are blessed to worship in and do the work of the Kingdom through today.  All by the Grace of God, perseverance and many loving offerings and donations, God has been good and there is so much more to come!

Somerset Baptist Church has come a long way and we recognize and celebrate those who have paved the path before us. While much has changed over our 45 year existence what remains is fervent allegiance to our core foundation of faith in the powerful gospel of Jesus Christ,  and a deep commitment to teach preach and live God's truth to the saving of souls.

The Three Pillars of Our Vision

Worship

Worship is a part of expressing our love to God for who He is, what He has said and what He will do in our lives.

John 4:24

Fellowship

Through fellowship with Christ, we will know Christ and make Him known.  Fellowship in the Gospel sparks three important responses: Thanksgiving, unbreakable bonds and purposeful prayer

1 John 1:7

Evangelism

We exist to  win souls for the Almighty God.

Luke 19:10

We are family!

We believe that REAL relationships are built beyond the pulpit and our four walls.   We love to fellowship, we love to serve and we love to love-

it is one of the greatest commandments and it our pleasure to live the word.

Meet our Pastor and First Lady

Pastor Marcus G. Johnson

Senior Pastor

Pastor Marcus Gordon Johnson was installed as the 4th Pastor of Somerset Baptist Church in January 2023.

Pastor Johnson was born and raised in Franklin Township, where he still resides. As a child Pastor Johnson attended Tabernacle Baptist Church (New Brunswick) where he accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age. As he grew into his teen and young adult years he drifted away from his faith. At the age of 24, however, he rededicated his life to Christ and was re-baptized at Macedonia Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Bishop Nehemiah Grier Jr. and has worked fervently for the Lord ever since.

In addition to the work that he does in his local church Pastor  Johnson has a passion for sharing the gospel beyond the 4 walls of the church and in 2018 Launched Harvest Labourers outreach ministry. This ministry exists to bring hope and the truth of Christ to the weary and lost.

At least once a month Pastor Johnson pitches a tent on Remsen Avenue in New Brunswick and serves hot coffee, bagels and donuts. More importantly, the gospel is shared and the team prays for those in need.

Pastor Johnson is the father of 5 children and is married to Paulette Johnson who serves faithfully alongside him.

The foundation of Pastor Johnson’s walk is built on the word of God and a deep commitment to his prayer life and fasting.

Psalm 1 is his favorite scripture and an ever-present source of truth and direction:

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.

5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

6 For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

First Lady Paulette Johnson

Minister

First Lady Paulette is passionate about the word and believes deeply in its power to transform lives, save souls and keep the believer.   While she serves in several capacities in the church, her greatest joy is women's ministry.

First Lady Johnson grew up at Somerset Baptist Church when her parents joined in 1982.
Her father, Reverend Ernesto Robinson was ordained as the second pastor of SBC  in 1996, and throughout her life he taught her how to love the word and effectively teach and preach it.

Licensed as a minister in 2015, she served  SBC until 2017 when she married, Elder Marcus Johnson and  began to attend church with him at Bethel COGIC, New Brunswick.    Imagine her awe to witness the sovereignty of God at the calling her husband to be the Pastor of SBC, bringing her back to her roots and a place that has had the most profound impact on her life.   God is Amazing!

We are so excited to have her back and working alongside our Pastor to lead SBC in kingdom work throughout the Somerset community.
